While reading chapter three and trying to analyze Pink’s
Type I/Type X theory, like Maria, I immediately thought of the favorite/worst
teacher exercise we did on the first day of class. The teacher I reflected on
as my least favorite was a hard-core Type X personality. As Pink noted on
pg.77, she was motivated by the paycheck she was receiving for her services in
the school district and that was it. Also she wasn’t too keen on promoting mental
well-being of students (pg.78) constantly criticizing students in front of
their peers at what I felt were inappropriate times. What’s even sadder is the
fact she taught in that high school for more than thirty years. I guess “good”
math teachers were just that hard to come by back then. What also confuses me
about “Mrs. Smith” is that outside of the classroom, she had a pretty
modest Type I personality. She and I got along great outside of the classroom
at sporting events and such, but we totally despised one another inside that
school. I know now that when I run into my all-time favorite teacher from
second grade, that I can truly appreciate her unfailing Type I personality.
